Cutting her nails

Reviewed 13 October 20262 min read

Why to keep her nails short, what to cut them with, and the easiest time to do it.

In short

  • Short nails stop her scratching herself.
  • Use baby clippers, round-ended scissors or a file.
  • Cut them while she sleeps or relaxes.

Why cut them

Some babies are born with long nails. Keep them short, so she does not scratch herself.

What to use

Use baby nail clippers or small, round-ended safety scissors. These are safer than adult clippers or scissors. You can also file her nails down with a fine emery board.

How to do it

Choose a time when she is asleep or relaxed. Then she moves less. Nails can be easier to trim after a bath.

Trim straight across the top. Do not cut down the edges. This helps avoid an ingrown toenail.
