Keeping it clean and dry

The stump dries out and drops off after about a week. Keep it clean and dry until it does.

Wash your hands before and after you touch it. Fold the top of her nappy down below the stump. Keep it loosely covered with clean clothes.

Put nothing on the stump. Do not bandage it.

Washing around it

You only need to wash it if it gets pee or poo on it. Use fresh cotton wool and warm water. Then pat it dry gently with a towel.

After it drops off

Some babies have a soft lump at the belly button. This is called an umbilical hernia. It is common in babies. It usually goes away by itself by the age of 5. See your doctor if you think she has one.
