What a growth spurt looks like, why she suddenly wants to feed more, and how to tell she is still getting enough milk.
In short
- She may suddenly want to feed more.
- It usually lasts a few days.
- Follow her hunger and fullness signs.
What it looks like
During a growth spurt, she may want to feed much more often for a few days. Feeds can come close together. This is called cluster feeding. It is very normal. It is most common in the first 3 to 4 months.
Growth spurts can also change how she sleeps. She may wake more often for a while.
She grows fastest in her first 6 months. After that, she grows more slowly.
What to do
Feed her when she shows she is hungry. She may put her hands to her mouth. She may turn her head towards your breast or the bottle. She may smack or lick her lips.
If you breastfeed, feed her as often and for as long as she wants. The more she feeds, the more milk you make.
If you bottle feed, take care not to overfeed her. When she is full, she closes her mouth or turns her head away. She may push the bottle away or fall asleep.
Is she still getting enough?
Her nappies and her weight tell you more than how often she feeds. From day 5, expect at least 6 heavy, wet nappies every 24 hours. After the first few days, she should gain weight steadily.
