Cluster feeding

Why she wants to feed again and again for hours, how long it lasts, and what to watch for.

In short

  • Many feeds close together are normal.
  • Frequent feeds help build your milk supply.
  • Most common in the first 3 to 4 months.

What it looks like

She wants to feed again and again over a few hours. Sometimes it feels almost nonstop. Some feeds are long and some are short.

It can happen in the day, the evening or the night. It often comes for a few days during a growth spurt. It is very common.

At first, it can feel like you do nothing but feed. A pattern comes gradually.

Why it helps

Each feed tells your body to make more milk for the next one. Following her lead keeps your supply matched to what she needs.

She also feeds for comfort and closeness. That is part of breastfeeding too.

In the early weeks, topping up with formula or giving a dummy can lower your milk supply.

If she is bottle fed

Bottle-fed babies cluster feed too. Take care not to overfeed her.

Watch for signs she needs a break. She may spread her fingers and toes, let milk spill out, stop sucking, turn her head away or push the bottle away.

When she is full, she will not want the bottle any more, or she will fall asleep.
