The signs that she is getting enough breast milk or formula, from feeds, nappies and weight, and when to ask for help.

In short

  • Count her wet and dirty nappies each day.
  • Steady weight gain shows she feeds well.
  • Ask for help early if you worry.

Signs during a breastfeed

  • She starts with a few quick sucks, then long, steady sucks and swallows.
  • You can hear and see her swallow.
  • Her cheeks stay round, not hollow.
  • She seems calm during the feed.
  • She comes off the breast on her own at the end.
  • Her mouth looks moist after feeds.
  • She seems content after most feeds.
  • Your breasts feel softer after feeds.

Nappies

In the first 48 hours, 2 or 3 wet nappies is normal. From day 5, expect at least 6 heavy, wet nappies every 24 hours. Her pee should be clear or pale yellow.

A breastfed baby should do at least 2 soft yellow poos a day from day 4, for the first few weeks. A formula-fed baby should poo at least once a day in the first weeks.

Disposable nappies can be hard to judge. Pour 2 to 4 tablespoons of water into a clean nappy to learn how wet feels.

Weight

It is normal for her to lose some weight in the first days. After that, she should gain weight steadily. Most babies are back to their birth weight by 3 weeks.

If you breastfeed

The more she feeds, the more milk you make. Feed her as often and for as long as she wants. Offer both breasts at each feed. Switch which one you start with.

Holding her skin to skin helps your supply. It also helps you spot early hunger signs.
