What nappy rash looks like, what helps it clear, what to avoid, and when to see a doctor.
In short
- Nappy rash is common and rarely serious.
- Change wet or dirty nappies straight away.
- Keep her skin clean and dry.
What it looks like
- Red or raw patches on her bottom or the whole nappy area
- Spots, pimples or blisters, which can be harder to see on brown and black skin
- Dry, scaly skin
- A sore or itchy bottom, so she seems uncomfortable
What helps
- Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as you can.
- Clean her skin with water, or wipes without fragrance or alcohol.
- Pat or gently rub her skin dry.
- Leave the nappy off when you can.
- Use extra absorbent nappies that fit well and are not too tight.
- With cloth nappies, use dry liners and change them often.
- Bath her every day.
- Do not bath her more than twice a day. Too much washing dries her skin.
What to avoid
- Soap, baby lotion and bubble bath
- Talcum powder, and antiseptic creams or lotions
- Plastic pants or nappy covers over the nappy
Creams
A pharmacist can suggest a nappy rash cream. A thin layer of barrier cream at each change can protect her skin. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before giving any medicine.
