How many wet nappies to expect each day, what her pee should look like, and the signs that she is not drinking enough.
In short
- Only 2 or 3 wet nappies at first.
- From day 5, expect 6 or more a day.
- Fewer wet nappies than usual needs a doctor.
How many to expect
In the first 48 hours, she is likely to have only 2 or 3 wet nappies. From day 5, expect at least 6 heavy, wet nappies every 24 hours. The same goes for a formula-fed baby.
Disposable nappies can be hard to judge. Pour 2 to 4 tablespoons of water into a clean nappy. This shows you how a wet one feels.
What her pee should look like
Her pee should be clear or pale yellow. Dark yellow, strong-smelling pee can mean she is not getting enough fluid.
If she is unwell or it is hot
Keep breastfeeding or giving formula. Offer small amounts more often than usual. Do not make her formula weaker.
If she has formula or solid food, she can also have small sips of water. If she is under 6 months, boil the water and let it cool first.
