A simple, soothing bedtime routine that can help her settle, and how to put her down safely at the end of it.
In short
- A calm routine can help her settle.
- Do the same things at the same time.
- End with her on her back in her cot.
Why a routine helps
A simple, soothing bedtime routine may help her settle. It is also a quiet time for just the two of you.
Too much excitement just before bed can wake her up again. Spend some time winding down first.
What it can include
- a warm bath
- night clothes and a fresh nappy
- dim lights and a calm room
- a bedtime story
- a lullaby, or a wind-up musical mobile
- a goodnight kiss and cuddle
- brushing her teeth, once she has some
Keep it the same
Do the same things at the same time every night. Start winding down about 30 minutes before she usually falls asleep.
Her routine will change as she grows. Be ready to adjust it.
If she uses a dummy, offer it as you settle her.
Keeping every sleep safe
Put her to sleep on her back, for every sleep, day and night. Use her own cot or Moses basket. Keep it in the same room as you for at least the first 6 months.
Use a firm, flat mattress. Keep the cot clear. No pillows, duvets, bumpers, loose blankets or soft toys.
Never fall asleep with her on a sofa or in an armchair. Keep her away from smoke. Do not let her get too hot. Keep the room between 16C and 20C.
